Overview

The DreamUp program, powered by NanoRacks, helps students raise money to fund testing their experiments in space on the U.S. National Laboratory aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Through DreamUp, junior high, high school and undergraduate college students can take advantage of NanoRacks’ three standardized research platforms on the International Space Station. NanoRacks DreamUp program, which aims to stimulate commercial student participation in low-earth orbit projects gives the opportunity to conduct experiments in the unique weightlessness environment of space.

Team Chicks in Space

This team is made up of three sisters in high school who invented a micro-gravity plant growing chamber. They placed as semi-finalists in a 2013 Nationwide STEM contest and their invention received a lot of attention. The Garden of E.T.O.N. (Extra Terrestrial Organic Nutrition) uses centrifuge to water the plants and the girls hope that it will contribute to healthy nutrition of future space travelers.

“We feel space exploration is important, and a renewable source of food and oxygen is essential for success in long-term missions. We believe the Garden of ETON may help solve some of the current problems of a functioning hydroponic garden in space,” said team member Adia Bulawa.
